200-year old former samurai residences surrounded by lush
green trees and shrubbery line the beautiful black wooden-fenced
street. People call the area "Little Kyoto of the
Tohoku region." The town's appearance and the famous
birch tree craft speak eloquently of the simple and practical
lifestyle of the samurai of those days.

The frightening Namahage come down from the top of the
mountain, shouting in eerie voices. The contrast between
the glowing red torches and the total darkness conveys
a sense of mystery and awe. This local festival, wishing
for the good health and happiness of children, can only
be experienced in Akita in winter and offers a glimpse
into a supernatural world. |
