The IZUNUMA and UCHINUMA MARSHES are located across three towns, TSUKIDATE, WAKAYANAGI, and HAZAMA. These marshes represent one of the major wintering places for birds in Japan. Many swans, wild geese　and HISHIKUI, White geese and ducks　are observed in this swamp.
Since many water fowl flock here, this place is considered scientifically important. IZUNUMA and UCHINUMA have been recorded in the Ramsar Convention.

There had been no swans migrating to the SHIROISHI RIVER since the second half of the MEIJI era.But in1965，swans started flying to SHIROISHI RIVER a few at a time. Now swansl come around November every year, and return to Siberia the following March. The organization for their protection was established at last in 1987. They help to feed the swans every year.

KASENUMA PARK is located across SHIOGAMA CITY, TAGAJO CITY, and RIFU TOWN. This park is a vast natural park which has a baseball field and soccer field. Many people enjoy cherry blossom viewing and IMONIKAI in the park as well as meeting swans.

The SENDAI PAGEANT OF STARLIGHT was started by a civic volunteer group in 1986.
Now, this symbol of winter is famous throughout JAPAN.
The zelkova trees which line the main thoroughfares of JOZENJIDORI AVENUE and AOBADORI AVENUE in SENDAI CITY are illuminated by about 600,000 electric bulbs, creating a romantic atmosphere at night.

The DONTO-SAI bonfire festival is to purify and burn New Year decorations such as MATSU-KAZARI and SHIMENAWA at shrines, and pray to the gods for prosperity in business and for good health. The DONTO-SAI is one of the events in KOSHOGATSU, the Japanese New Year, which is held in every shrine in MIYAGI PREF. on January 14 every year. The DONTO-SAI held at OSAKI-HACHIMAN-GU in AOBA WARD, SENDAI CITY is especially famous. HADAKA-MAIRI is the main event in which 200 organizations participate every year, and they pray to the gods for good health and prosperity in business while shivering with cold.
