festival outline
At the AKITA KANTO MATSURI FESTIVAL, the light from the huge paper lanterns brighten KANTO ODORI AVENUE. This "festival of light" which illuminates the night sky is held on August 3 to August 6 every year. Spectators are filled with excitement and impressed by the light of the many paper lanterns which appear to dance in time to the rhythm of the music.

Highlight of the festival
In addition to the fact that the paper lanterns are very large and heavy, it is not simply a matter of carrying them, but there are also techniques for supporting them on your shoulders or on your forehead. Supporting the lanterns on your waist is considered especially difficult.
If the extensions of bamboo are added on rapidly, the pole will bend and be in a very unstable state. However, this is very impressive. The largest group of paper lanterns is 50kg in weight 12m in length, and the smallest is 5kg in weight and 5m in length.
Although the size of a paper lantern changes with the size of the bamboo supporting it, the usual number of paper lanterns is 46 pieces or 24 pieces. In the largest group of lanterns, the 1st level consists of 2 lanterns, the 2nd level consists of 4 lanterns, the 3rd - 8th levels are made up of 6 lanterns, and the 9th level of 4 lanterns, for a total of 46 lanterns. At the festival which illuminates the night sky in a crimson hue, the thrilling techniques used to support the lanterns is also a highlight.
