festival outline
Every year from August 6 to 8, the main streets of SENDAI CITY are decorated with many bamboo poles decorated with colorful paper crafts. During the TANABATA eve Fireworks Display, about 12,000 fireworks are set off to the summer sky.

Highlight of the festival
Strips of paper, paper streamers, folded paper cranes, casting nets, money pouches, paper baskets and paper clothing are used in TANABATA decorations. These items made with colorful WASHI paper are called the seven basic decorations for the TANABATA FESTIVAL. Ornamental balls are also important items for this event. Paper streamers indicate stars and are painted in blue, red, yellow, white and purple.
The decorations are hung on real bamboo trees. The TANABATA eve Fireworks Display is held on August 5 and TANABATA PARADES are held from 17:00 to 19:00 during the festival period.Visitors are advised to carry an umbrella, for we often have rainy days during this time of the year.
